A program of giving coordinated by our Social Justice Committee
The Share the Plate program has been very successful at our congregation during the past years. Our congregation’s mission statement invites us to “involve everyone in working for a peaceful, just and free world.” Our Unitarian Universalist principles call for us to work for justice and humanity. By reaching out to the community, we are showing San Antonio who we are and for what we stand. In addition to raising awareness among the congregation and providing some financial resources, Share the Plate offers opportunities for our members to develop and deepen connections with these non-profit organizations.
Despite some initial concerns that giving money to other organizations might decrease giving to our church, it appears that giving to our church has increased. This has also been the case at other Unitarian Universalist congregations that have a Share the Plate program; they report an increase in the giving nature of their members, resulting in higher pledges and a stronger budget. To learn more about how Share the Plate works in other congregations, read these articles from UU World: http://www.uuworld.org/life/articles/2390.shtml (July/August 2003) and http://www.uuworld.org/news/articles/2389.shtml (November 28, 2005).
The following contributions have been made to Share the Plate recipients:
- May 2011-April 2012: $11,626.49*
- June 2010-April 2011: $13,275.29
- June 2009-May 2010: $12,187.98
- June 2008-May 2009: $11,727.88
- September 2007-May 2008: $12,362.99
* Does not include the February 2012 collection for the Community Responsibility Endowment Fund (CREF).
We continue to give the congregation more information about the recipient organization each month. Our vision is that we will not only give money, but stay in contact with the organization and have members choose to get more involved with the organization.
